Victory lap -- Sticks -- Puppy -- Escape from Spiderhead -- Exhortation -- Al Roosten -- The Semplica girl diaries -- Home -- My chivalric fiasco -- Tenth of Dcember.
A collection of stories includes "Home," a wryly whimsical account of a soldier's return from war; "Victory Lap," a tale about an inventive abduction attempt; and the title story, in which a suicidal cancer patient saves the life of a young misfit.

Gripping read submitted by Rachel S. on June 27, 2013, 9:09pm Saunders presents an amazing collection of short stories in The Tenth of December. The story settings range from modern day American suburbia to an undefined, futuristic era where chemicals control human emotion. My two favorites of the book were "Victory Lap," about a teenaged boy struggling to do the right thing when the girl next door is in danger, and "Tenth of December," about a young boy who revives the spirit of a gentleman who is terminally ill. The characters' voices in each of the stories are rich and dynamic, and they lift off the page. Many (most) of the stories are unsettling and uncomfortable to read, but I found that experience refreshing and provocative. Highly recommend!
Not for me, but might be for you

3/5 stars. I just can't stand short stories. Only for my book club would I read a book like this. (I personally read books to get lost in the story, and short stories are the antithesis of that. So while I appreciate the form, it does nothing for me.)
I think the author did what he set out to do. Each story creates a vivid setting or character, and packs a punch. Why they all depict miserable, twisted views of the world is beyond me, but again, this just isn't my kind of book. That's a style preference, not a fault of the writing itself.
They are dark little stories, but very well written. Someone who likes the style should read this and write a review, 'cause I'm just not the right person for the job!
Stories you can't easily forget submitted by TeacherN on June 28, 2021, 2:25pm I don't always fully understand George Saunders' short stories, but I love puzzling over them and thinking about them. Sometimes they make me laugh - other times they make me cry. Two storries in this collection that I can't stop thinking about are Sticks and The Semplica Girl Diaries.
