I am not really sure who the audience for this book was. Having become recently introduced to netsuke through the amazing collection at the Toledo Museum of Art, I thought the story of this collection, especially the hare with the amber eyes, would be central to the book. Instead, it's a wealthy man's story of his wealthy ancestors through the generations and their art collections that they developed because they literally had more money than they knew what to do with. The highlights are the snippets of history, especially how his Jewish ancestors were discriminated against and their particular horrors in Vienna at the beginning of WWII. But most of it was overly detailed, and even with all the detail the hare with the amber eyes never even comes into play.
I would have liked to see this story told as historical fiction from the point of view of Elisabeth, who is a strong and interesting character whose parts of the story are most interesting.
