Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of Sun by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs' themes. The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

Cat Power explores some new sounds submitted by Richard Lee Pierre on August 18, 2019, 10:18pm A departure in style, this album utilizes electronics, synths, autotune, samples, etc. in addition to her usual piano/guitar/drums combos. The result is sometimes dark and sometimes warm, but always fresh and inviting, if a bit of a shock to some Cat Power fans. Lyrically, the songs are as pointed and poignant as ever, and there are the usual cameos from friends and fellow musicians (including Iggy Pop, this time).
