some parts are better than others

In such a short, limited book a full explanation of a set of 4 (or so) cultures' beliefs just aint gonna happen. And parts of this book rather than explaining beliefs, left me confused about what the Olmec, Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec people believed.
But the myth about Mayan ball-playing twins outwitting the gods of the underworld is actually engaging and it's strangeness could spark an awareness of how different--yet similar (to Prometheus, etc.)--such stories can be, from one culture to another.
I wish this was a different kind of book and that gave a more in-depth explanation of such things as how the Aztec, Maya, and Toltec were related to the Olmec, with a timeline of when and where each existed, and perhaps also how they differed from each other, but that's not the kind of book this is meant to be: a picture book for kids.
And it's not bad given the kind of book that it actually is.
