The Film is a Present submitted by whoisdonald on June 16, 2013, 8:46am I found this film inspiring and a well made documentary about a fascinating figure of the art world. Abramovic is a paradox, both extremely open and revealing, yet in other ways very controlled and closed. The filmmakers explore this territory skillfully and, at times, with Abramovic as our tour guide. The film centers around her major MoMA retrospective show, which provides an arc and an effective structure to the film. We get to see into Abramovic's process, her extraordinary (perhaps unhealthy) dedication to her artistic vision, the surrounding hype of the art world's reactions and several fun cameos (eg., James Franco). We also get insight into the essence of what makes Abramovic tick through several of her closest colleagues and collaborators. Highly recommended.
