Imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better and are in need of his protection.

Dark Shadows has all of the customary Tim Burton style, but it's lacking something. The story is interesting enough, and the characters all take turns chewing up the scenery, but it still isn't very good. There are a lot of "jokes" that fall flat. The scenes that are meant to convey emotion come across as soap opera cliches. The final battle of the film is actually really cool, but I must admit I was sort of checked out at that point. If you've got an empty afternoon to spare, check it out, but this is one movie you can afford to miss.
