The carrots that grow in Crackenhopper Field are the fattest and crispiest around and Jasper Rabbit cannot resist pulling some to eat each time he passes by, until he begins hearing and seeing creepy carrots wherever he goes.

silly fun submitted by camelsamba on June 29, 2013, 8:42pm Silly fun. Reminded us of Muncha Muncha Muncha.

Very funny paranoia (or is it...) submitted by LibraryMaven on June 15, 2014, 12:19pm Jasper Rabbit loves carrots, but his love for them takes a nightmarish turn when creepy carrots start popping up on him everywhere. Graphic novel-like illustrations enliven this picture book, which is illustrated in shades of gray with pops of orange from the carrots. Humor is brought into the book by playing on the familiar trope of scary things (like creepy carrots) turning into other things (like a bunny toy in a bucket) with the flip of a light switch, while also playing on childhood fears. Despite the noire-ish illustrations, the surprise ending of the book curtails any nightmares. The front and end papers feature carrots, creepy at the beginning of the book and friendly at the end. The book itself is large for a picture book, as are the illustrations, making it good read-alouds, though for a large group the black and white details may be lost unless there is good lighting. The book is best for elementary students who have some familiarity with distinguishing between fact and fiction: the plot and particularly surprise twist at the end of the book are most effective when readers can shift between what is likely true and what is not. Highly recommended.

This book is based on a true story... submitted by crankycrack on June 20, 2015, 12:11am and that creeps me out.

Excellent illustrator submitted by jmb.mlis on July 19, 2016, 11:43pm Love the b&w illustrations with orange pops.

hilarious! submitted by kkellis on July 17, 2018, 7:45pm A fun book! Great illustrations. We loved the ending!

Fantastic Illustrations submitted by Meginator on August 29, 2020, 4:15pm This book has a clever surface-level story about a rabbit being haunted by carrots from the field he often plunders that drives the action along well enough, but its real strength lies in its magnificent illustrations. Rendered in shades of gray with occasional orange accents and arrayed in panels on black backgrounds, the pictures recall classic cinema and slide shows. Each image seems to glow against the page, and Peter Brown’s understanding of black-and-white lightning is unparalleled, giving each panel a uniquely cinematic quality the heightens the narrative tension. I loved the variations in the staging and the character design, with the titular Creepy Carrots having a menacing, yet goofy aura that shouldn’t be too frightening for most young readers. The story is so-so and fairly standard, but the illustrations make this a must-read for readers of all ages; it’s a masterclass in highly stylized visual storytelling.

A 4 year old's review submitted by abatema1 on July 11, 2022, 3:41pm The book is funny and creepy and good. It was funny when the bunny was running away. I will read it again.

The truth finally told submitted by suttonp on July 25, 2022, 1:49pm Carrots are creepy. It's good that this has been recognized
