Early Readers Will Love This Book submitted by annevm on August 7, 2013, 2:25pm I'm very fond of this book by Mo Willems because it's funny. Children who are just starting to enjoy the independence of reading books on their own will surely warm up to Gerald, the organized elephant, and Piggie, the goofy pig. Together these two animals have quite a humorous adventure, and they end up playing pirate.

This exciting exchange in friendship covers the imagination of Gerald wanting to go for a drive and Piggie providing the supplies needed for a drive. Request after request Piggie is patient, dedicated, and provides. All requests except for...a car, something very important to go for a drive. But have no fear parents, Gerald and Piggie are great examples for our children and show their quick adaptability and use the supplies provided (thanks Piggie) for a pirate ship!

Typically, Gerald the elephant frets and fusses, while Piggie is free-spirited and joyful. Here, Gerald over-prepares for an anticipated drive (with Piggie cheerfully supplying his increasingly excessive demands) until the friends realize that they lack the most basic necessity for a drive: a car. Happily, they have their imaginations, and the pile of supplies come in handy for playing pirate ship instead.

I love how easily Piggy pivots at the end of the story to find a way to have fun in spite of the obstacle the pair encounters. Such a good lesson. There’s always a way to have fun and play.

Great Elephant and Piggie Story submitted by berger_d on August 4, 2023, 12:03am We haven't found an Elephant and Biggie book we don't like, but my kids especially loved the humor in the continually ramping-up repetition in this book. This has been a favorite since they were very young and has retained that status as they've learned to read it for themselves. Just a fun and funny story!
