Evan, Jessie, and their mother go to Grandma's house during Christmas vacation, in part to help out after a recent fire. When they get there, they come face-to-face with erratic behavior by Grandma. Evan especially has to bear the brunt of it, but he shows yet again how much insight he has into other people. And to top it all off, the bell that is central to the New Year's Eve tradition has gone missing! Will they find it in time?
This book has some deep themes, and lots to discuss while reading aloud. Candy Smash is next in the series - I wonder how the situation with Grandma will resolve?
