Jasper Fforde for young adults submitted by rummella on July 21, 2013, 7:05pm I LOVE Jasper Fforde's adult novels-- quirky and funny and well-thought. He does the same magic in his Last dragonslayer series.... Both books so far are excellent for the young adult audience! Magic, british humor, smart but not annoying protagonist...
Dragonslayer Continued
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 27, 2013, 12:31pm
If you enjoyed Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" series you will also enjoy his "Dragonslayer" series. Read "The Last Dragonslayer" first in order to understand what is happening in this one.
Jennifer is an orphan raised by crustacean-worshipping nuns in a mythical kingdom. When she came of age she was assigned to work as the manager of a company of magicians, Kazam. The company owner has been missing for years. Jennifer is beginning to train her successor in the business. She has a pet quarkbeast (a mythical, magical but ugly animal) who will die when it meets its other half.
Jennifer is now 16, but still the most mature and smart person at Kazam, which has been losing business as magic has become weakened in this world and is being replaced by technology. The king (the book is set in a place that resembles Britain but is broken into small kingdoms) orders a contest between the wizards of Kazam and their rivals iMagic in order to force the two agencies to merge. Kazam's change of winning decline as several misfortunes strike.
The "Dragonslayer" series has a similar feel to the "Thursday Next" series as it takes place in a parallel world in which science and magic work differently than our own. Fforde still manages to get a dig in at big corporations in both series, while making magic (or what looks like it to us) into a part of everyone's daily life in these worlds.
Second book in the series - doing great! submitted by delaflynn on August 22, 2021, 12:41am The second book in the Dragonslayer series reveals even more of the murky background of our protagonist. So many secrets are uncovered and the reader starts to understand that there are hidden power struggles going on.
