The gorilla -- Letters to Yann Andrea -- The ghosts of Fransawi -- Déjà vu -- The beaver -- Temporary death -- My own Sana'a -- The stone of desire.
In November 2009 the International Prize for Arabic Fiction organised a workshop for eight critically-acclaimed writers from Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. This bilingual volume brings together the eight pieces produced during the workshop and showcases the creativity of this younger generation of Arab writers. We find here a range of styles and themes: social realism from Egypt, a tale from the deserts of Darfur, a grim farcical allegory from Tunisia, family drama from Saudi Arabia, a story that explores home and exile against the backdrop of Sana'a. Emerging Arab Voices represents some of the best work by contemporary writers in the Arab world today.
