must read! submitted by fairytale on June 16, 2013, 2:54pm This book is absolutely wonderful. It is amazing how many pantry staples you can make from scratch. This author's writing style is down-to-earth, friendly, smart, and accessible. I highly recommend this to everyone!

this book is yummy submitted by smgop on June 19, 2013, 8:41pm And the food is too! Written in light, friendly style as if you are sitting in her kitchen... some of the things she makes from scratch are a little bit too much (pop tarts?), but her point that we can make delicious things from scratch is much needed nowadays.

Must own submitted by ark on July 29, 2013, 10:57am I loved this book so much when I checked it that my boyfriend bought it for me as a gift. The kind of cookbook that is more than a cookbook; you can read it in bed at night just for the endearing, heartwarming stories that Alana writes about her family and their experiences. Even as a vegan there are recipes in here that I've earmarked (the chai, salad dressings, pizza sauce, tea blends, snack bars, instant oatmeal....)

Great book submitted by Lucy S on July 26, 2014, 11:40am I love everything I've made from this book. Some of the recipes are more involved but most are pretty straighforward.

Homemade basics submitted by cc on July 1, 2016, 12:27pm I enjoyed the author's style, but many of the recipes are so basic that I would recommend it more for the beginning cook. The recipes I have tried are tasty!

Very Comprehensive submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 8:38pm This helpful cookbook includes recipes for a wide variety of household staples that can replace common store-bought foods, with a few surprising inclusions. The book is arranged roughly by supermarket aisle; this makes it fairly intuitive to find various recipes, although I recommend skimming the whole book first before homing in on a few items to incorporate into your regular routine. The book includes everything from cream cheese and condiments to pop tarts and pasta sauce; it is fairly comprehensive and suitable for the moderately and seriously ambitious home cook, and everyone in between. Chernila adds a nice personal touch to every recipe, giving them evocative subtitles and accompanying each with a small story from her life that makes the sometimes intimidating recipes feel more approachable. Overall, this book makes for an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the possibilities of home cooking.

Recipes and Storytelling submitted by elholm on August 1, 2021, 6:10pm Excellent read, both for the content of the recipes and the anecdotes given by the author. Decent variety of recipe difficulty as well, from granola bars to mozzarella cheese.
