Describes how a teacher named Miss Chew encouraged individuality, and accepted learning differences, and helped a young student with academic difficulties get extra time to take tests and permission to be in advanced art classes. Inspired by the author's memories of her art teacher.

the power of teachers
submitted by camelsamba on June 29, 2012, 10:39pm
This is a story about the power of teachers. We all need a Mr Donovan and a Miss Chew to help us overcome our challenges and see our talents. Unfortunately, too many of us encounter myriad Mrs Spauldings, who instead try to impose their own vision of the world on us.
If you're familiar with Patricia Polacco you are already familiar with her wonderful art. This story tells a part of how she came to exercise her artistic talent. I especially liked how the pencil drawings of the young girl of the story mixed with the colorful artwork of the story. [I would say 'paintings' but the front matter indicates they are marker, not paint.]
