The basis for Downton Abbey
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 24, 2013, 12:53am
"Downton Abbey" is filmed in the real British Highclere Castle, owned by today's Count and Countess of Carnarvon, who wrote the book. The Count's ancestor was Lady Almina, Countess Carnarvon on whom the fictional Lady Grantham is very vaguely based. Count Carnarvon is best known for funding the expedition in which Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 in Egypt. This book focuses a great deal of that expedition.
The book also details the lavish spending by the Carnarvons, funded mainly by Lady Almina's birth father, a wealthy banker. Her wedding was quite the social event in the late 19th century, made so by her father's excessive spending on it. The book also details how the family ran a private hospital for World War I Army officers, much as the Grantham family does in the TV series.
People who like reading about history, and especially about the truth behind TV series based on historical figures, will particularly enjoy this book.
