Good, but not as good as 100 thousand kingdoms submitted by marielle on July 5, 2012, 12:39pm This is N.K. Jemisin's first book after her award nominated Inheritance Trilogy, and is the first book in The Dreamblood Series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it wasn't as suspenseful and as engaging as 100 Thousand Kingdoms, which disappointed me. Still, she is to be congratulated for writing something significantly different from her first trilogy. The novel is as unique from the first series as the first series was to begin with. Her world building, as usual, is excellent. My main complaint is that her protagonist, isn't as engaging as she could be. I like her, but she simply doesn't pull me in.

I think part of the issue is that romance is one of N.K.'s strengths- and passions- and this book had none. It was straight fantasy. I love plain old fantasy, but something felt "missing" about this book, and I think that was it. Maybe we'll see more in subsequent novels in the series.

Excellent all around submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 10, 2023, 11:07am Oooo, this was excellent. It was a little bit of a slow build at the beginning as Jemisin’s worldbuilding introduced us to the people and context. Everything does not make sense right at the start, but comes together like the weaving of a tapestry whose picture emerges from the threads. Characters have histories, and relationships add depth. The countries have histories, too, and those play out in current events without dragging the story into some lengthy morass of obsolete treatises. The history is living and breathing, and important to today’s actions in the story. And the story has plenty of action. Excellent all around.
