Didn't grab me

This one just didn't do a lot for me. It was a slice-of-life book alternately set in Italy and Hollywood, from the 1940's or '50's to the present.

I will say that it managed a vast number of characters and the time-jumping between chapters better than most books do.

But still... I just found a number of the characters to be fairly weak. The plot seemed thin. In the end, everything wrapped up too well. It just wasn't a book that grabbed me.

Evocative of another time

The different points of view in the book are what really make it special. I also enjoyed the descriptions of Italy - it made me want to book a trip there!

Read this!

The Additional Details section above pretty much covers it, but the thing I loved the most about this book is how well-written the characters are. Michael Deane sticks with you, as do others. The way the chapters are woven together is perfect for weaving the reader through and connecting the worlds into a really thoughtful and well-researched story.
