COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Extremely Good! submitted by pamhockey25 on August 6, 2012, 4:01pm The casting of the young boy who played Oskar was fantastic. He made the movie! I didn't know anything about the movie other than the dad had died in 9/11. The way Oskar deals with the loss of his father and the quest he undertakes thinking that somehow he will keep his dad's memory alive is very real. Now that I've seen the movie, I plan to read to book.

Powerful submitted by kathleen824 on August 13, 2012, 1:08pm What a powerful and thought provoking movie. I was immediately drawn in and watched in fascination as the movie unfolded. Brilliant.

Very Good and Powerful! submitted by ssmyth on August 26, 2012, 7:29pm I knew very little about the movie before I watched it and now I know why it was so popular. I agree the young actor that played Oskar was fantastic and I also plan to read the book. I highly recommend it!

Intense submitted by smgop on August 30, 2012, 2:41pm I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie - it was extremely intense and more than a bit disturbing. I was heartened by the role of the mom, and how she knew and loved her son so well and so much that she, in essence, accompanied him on his quest without telling him so, as she knew he needed to do it for himself.

Brings back memories submitted by dumusicgirl on August 2, 2013, 11:05am As a New Yorker, I have had many conversations about that horrible day in the decade or so since. This film did a very good job of showing the impact of 9/11 on individuals.

Incredibly Close submitted by SBNB on July 16, 2014, 9:48pm This is a very good movie, a lot better than I expected. Sad but good.

sad but thought provoking submitted by Jackie77 on August 28, 2015, 10:02pm Extremely sad. The boy searching all over for his father. Hd comes across many people who seem to help him find meaning to life and death. Good storyline and character development.

informative submitted by yufamily on August 24, 2019, 1:50pm A touching movie

Incredibly sad submitted by mandevil on September 19, 2020, 2:43pm A good story, but hard to watch. Even 19 years later the sadness, grief and pain of the twin towers terrible destruction effects me. I enjoyed the boy’s determination and his quirky personality.

Filling the box submitted by tarascon on August 2, 2023, 12:28pm A realistic look at neurodiversity, survivors of diverse traumas, with a multicultural and multi-class range of New Yorkers all rendered with compassion. This film was far better than I expected; I’d heard about it but knew next to nothing when I checked it out.

And last but not least it’s the best examination of September 11 and its aftermath I’ve seen yet, bar none. By which I mean it’s not political, accusatory, nor exploitative. A real gem.
