A mostly accurate depiction
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 16, 2013, 9:10pm
This portrayal of the Borgia family in the Vatican is intriguing in its depictions of the Borgias' exploits and corruption, and is remarkably accurate. Pope Alexander VI did indeed have numerous mistresses (the show only depicts two) and several acknowledged children (the show only depicts four), for example.
This series particularly shows the ruthless work of Cardinal Cesare Borgia, on whom Machiavelli based his political science thesis "The Prince." The Pope and his children spent the church's funds lavishly but also campaigned both politically and militarily to centralize the Vatican's control of the church and its money.
The series is very violent, including depictions of murder, rape, and torture. Of course, these are historically accurate as well, but very disturbing.
