Madam Marie-France provides a glamorous life for some of the most alluring and desirable women in Paris, but also treats them as virtual slaves. Among the dozen employees are a cheerful girl with a regular adoring john, a regal beauty who disdains all the men fighting for her services, a long-legged stunner reaching the end of her career, and a sweet and trusting new girl who winds up in bed with a very rough customer.

A look inside a Paris brothel submitted by messa on June 26, 2012, 7:55pm To be blunt about it, this movie will kill your buzz. It takes a interesting, but depressing look into the life of women living and working in a Paris brothel at the turn of the century. The sets and costumes are dazzling, beautiful to look at, but it's clear how hard this life is, both for the women working there and the madam who runs it. All seem to be imprisoned in one way or another, whether it's to the madam or the landlord. As known prostitutes, they are not allowed to leave the brothel without either the madam or a man as it would be considered solicitation.

The women are saddled with "debt" that the madam charges them for room and board as well as having to buy their own toiletries and clothing. The longer they stay, the deeper in debt they become. The dream of most of the women is to find a john (a customer) who will pay their debt and grant them their freedom, but as the madam points out to them, men don't usually marry "working girls".

However, don't let this deter you from seeing this movie. The friendship and sisterhood of the women is touching to watch. They comfort each other, share in each others joys and sorrows and even share what little personal possessions they own at times. The only complaint I have about this film is other than seeing how the women live, there is no real plot that I could see. No "Ah Ha" moment. Still, a good movie and well worth watching. No terribly explicit sex scenes, but there are some, as well as scenes of nudity and violence as would be expected. In French with English subtitles.

the ugly back story submitted by mmckenzie on July 9, 2015, 12:45pm This was depressing for the ugly back story on prostitution at the turn of the century. Of course, how could one expect otherwise. Especially horrible is how the women are treated by the men, one bloody scene has flashbacks leading up to it.
