early Christie: romance with the mystery
submitted by camelsamba on July 2, 2016, 10:24pm
I picked up this audiobook on a bit of a whim: I wanted to read (listen to) an Agatha Christie, and it had the earliest publication date of those on the shelf. I had no idea what I was getting into. For some reason it made me think of Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White - probably the combination of romance, societal expectations, and long complicated plot. But the romance also felt so stilted and overwrought at times (starting around chapter 26 or 27) that I got annoyed. Maybe it's the reader? Her voice for Harry is aggravating (and to a lesser extent, the one for Sir Eustace Pedlar).
After I finished it, I read that this was originally serialized as "Anne The Adventurous" and should perhaps be viewed as a satire of the genre, which accounts for the overblown interactions. Had I known that going in, I might have had a different reaction. As it is, I give it 2.5 stars - I didn't quite like it, but "okay" seems a bit low for Dame Agatha Christie.
