Ok submitted by rimpopu on July 29, 2013, 10:07am The book talks about life under the snow while a boy and his father ski on the top. It was a difficult book to read out loud to children. There is really is not a story or much scientific information as I was expecting from a book like this. It is a ok to read in winter months when one wonders where all the animals go. It talks about squirrel, shrew, voles, deer mice, bumblebee, chipmunk, beavers among other.

great snowy picture book submitted by manz on November 2, 2013, 2:09pm I found this picture book delightful. In this ALA Notable Book, the illustrations are beautiful and move the story along. The perspective in them is just wonderful. It's a sleepy tale of a father and child on a wintry cross-country trek through the winter woods, and the animals they encounter who live over and under the snow. A great winter read if you're looking for books about animals that live in the snow.

I love how the index has a list of the animals and where they live during winter.

Winter in the Forest submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:35pm This beautiful picture book is a tribute to forest animals who live, as the title suggest, over and under the snow during the winter. I needed the (excellent) scientific note at the end of the book to fully understand some of the “under the snow” illustrations, but its peaceful demeanor make this book one to revisit often and savor. The simple illustration style and beautifully calibrated color palette imbue the book with a sense of quiet and calm, even as larger animals hunt and smaller animals scamper around in the layer of tunnels that forms between the snow and the ground. I highly recommend this book for any readers interested in local animal life, and be sure to read the extra facts presented in the final few pages.
