Halfway through The Rook submitted by Todd Perkins on February 10, 2015, 9:37am Does it bother anyone else that halfway through this book the perspective shifts from first person to third person? I'm just there, and it's jarring to say the least. Not that I think I won't finish it, but I don't quite see the logic in it. More on this one later, I think.

Wonderful world building and well written characters submitted by selkielass on June 12, 2015, 3:40pm I was absolutely delighted to find a fast-paced, action-packed fantasy novel populated largely by nuanced female characters. You won't find any one-dimensional "strong female characters" here! The Rook reads like the lovechild of Torchwood and Harry Potter with enough world building to keep it from feeling derivative.

An instant favorite submitted by arguzman on June 17, 2016, 11:48am I first read this last year and fell in love with the characters and the world. Am currently re-reading in preparation for the sequel, Stiletto, which was just released. If you like your paranormal with a pleasant dose of humor, look no farther!

In other reviews I've heard this book compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Torchwood, X-Men and Ghostbusters. There is even a little promo video for the book on the official site, http://www.rookfiles.com/. If this sounds like your cup of tea, please check it out! You won't be disappointed.

Best Book I Read in 2012 submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2017, 11:32pm I love this book! The fantasy/science fiction universe is built on a solid, if not totally original concept (i.e., people with superpowers have shadow facilities and government organizations whose actions intersect with the real world), but O'Malley takes it and runs with it. It's clear that he's having an absolute blast and he lets his imagination run wild to excellent effect. His great skill is in reinventing tried and true tropes and taking them in surprisingly original directions. Amnesia-as-plot is difficult to execute well, but here it serves not only to introduce readers into the world but also as a driving force for much of the narrative action. The action itself is convincing and the book is often laugh-out-loud hilarious. The characters are great, the political intrigue is convincing, the writing is immersive, and the only thing wrong with "The Rook" is that it ends.

This is one of the most joyful, flat-out fun reading experiences that I can remember and I immediately bought the book after first reading it. I cannot recommend it highly enough: you MUST read this book if it sounds at all appealing to you (and even if it sounds like a bit of a stretch)!

Great Mystery-Horror-Urban-Fantasy! submitted by mawk on August 26, 2017, 8:45pm I generally fall deep into series urban fantasy (Dresden Files, Toby Daye, Incryptid, Iron Druid, etc) - quick reads, a bit fluffy, and easy to mainline if I want to re-read them. This one surprised me, by being none of those things, and yet I LOVED it. It's got great world building and a really interesting concept, and Myfanwy is a fun character as she tries to figure out the new world. Extra bonus was hearing about all the different people's powers in the Checquey, as well as some of the weird occurrences they've dealt with.

Great book! submitted by asrecker on June 15, 2019, 5:57pm I really enjoyed this book. It keeps you on your toes and kept my interest through the whole thing!
