Must-see!

This movie was fascinating. To be honest, I didn't understand probably 80% of what the characters were saying (kind of like watching "Star Trek" where the technical lingo doesn't always make sense, but you get the gist of what's happening), but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. This is a fictionalized account of the Wall Street crisis of 2008 starring phenomenal actors on all sides. The plot focuses on one night at an investment bank (online reviews say it's meant to be a hybrid of Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch) where an entry-level worker discovers a disastrous error has been made and the mad scramble to cover the tracks afterward. As we work our way up the chain of command through a series of meetings, we are introduced each time to a new "higher-up" who is even more ruthless and frightening than the last.
While this film doesn't depict any actual events from the crisis, I think it's one every American should see if only to understand just how delicate the entire system really is, and how the decisions or mistakes of a few can have major impacts on the entire world. It's nominated for Best Screenplay for this year's Oscars, but in my opinion, the movie was robbed in this award season. The dialog is top-notch, and every actor from Kevin Spacey to Jeremy Irons gives an award-worthy performance.

An inside look at the thinking that turned a downturn into the crisis submitted by timdufresne on August 1, 2018, 3:11pm What made the fall of 2008 special? What happened in the few hours and days where our financial system collapsed. This movie paints a fairly realistic portrayal of what that downturn looked like from inside. The tough decisions that got made that accelerated a problem in the housing market into the THE financial crisis. Great watching as an accompaniment to a movie like The Big Short.
