Gently evil: Called to a crime scene at a working-class boarding house, Gently and Bacchus find a woman horribly beaten to death, her eyes covered discreetly with a handkerchief. The victim also carried her daughter's birth certificate, with the name of the child's father crossed out and "satan" penciled in. Following this lead, Gently and Bacchus probe the twisted secrets of a family that seems to harbor pure evil.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

England in the 1960s submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 27, 2012, 12:26pm This is a wrenching and realistic portrayal of northeastern England in the 1960s, including all the sexism, racism, homophobia and other prejudices--not to mention police corruption--that era included.

The series is very violent and graphically portrays rape and other forms of torture.

The northeastern "Geordie" accent can be hard to understand, which is why the local (and very corrupt) police force assigned Inspector Gently a sergeant who translates the local slang for him.

George Gently submitted by willow on August 26, 2015, 8:54am In this episode, set in 1966, Inspector Gently and Sgt. Bacchus investigate the death of a young woman, and finds many dark secrets. There are no graphic scenes of torture or rape, as was mentioned in the other review, but it is a detective show featuring solving murders, so dead bodies appear, and some police officers do beat confessions or other information out of suspects. This episode includes the mention, but not depiction, of severe child abuse.
