Very entertaining submitted by hbc414 on August 2, 2013, 8:55am I picked this up and didn't put it down until I finished it. It’s a very fast and fast-paced read. The protagonist, Jorg, is a thirteen-year-old prince hardened (to the point of being insane) by witnessing, at the age of ten, the death of his mother and younger brother. Determined to get revenge, he runs away from his father’s castle and joins a small mercenary band, eventually becoming its leader.
Jorg's ruthlessness and determination made me like him even while I was shaking my head at how utterly messed up he was. (I should probably note - this is a violent book.) And while the society of the book may at first seem like a typical vaguely middle-ages fantasy set-up, there are some intriguing (if rather overt) signs of less typical origins.
I’m looking forward to the next one in the Broken Empire series.
