Before the Premier League and multi-million pound salaries, in England 'football' was a dirty word. The game was in disgrace, the fans, hooligans, the nation, it seemed, were all played out. Then there was Italia '90 - The World Cup - a shot at redemption. Over six short weeks and under intense scrutiny, the team united a nation coming within a heartbeat of reaching the World Cup Final.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS
The Crucible of Football submitted by Meginator on July 12, 2019, 10:42pm This documentary follows the English national team’s journey at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and addresses the historical context that made their run to the semifinals so iconic. The narrative through-lines intertwine nicely and give viewers a deeper understanding of the ways in which politics and sports created England's hooligan culture in the Thatcher era while presenting background information on the tournament and the English players. The filmmakers largely (but, alas, do not entirely) resist the urge to present an unexamined feel-good story, often settling instead for scathing criticism that emerges from their choice and juxtaposition of footage; despite this, I feel like the film could have had a stronger editorial point of view. Though having a basic understanding of the contemporary international football scene adds depth to the story, I think the film stands well on its own even if the filmmakers did miss an opportunity to look ahead and examine some of the ways that Italia 1990 actually did change English football culture instead of simply stating that it did. Sports are often about so much more than the players and contests, and this documentary really illuminates that.
