COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Holly Fans, Take Notice submitted by tonyphil on July 3, 2013, 8:36am It's great to hear most of Buddy Holly's familiar hits, recast by various leading and innovative musical artists in 2011. A few of Holly's lesser-known releases and compositions are also on this tribute album. In all, 19 Buddy Holly songs are covered here, most of them in some fresh, inventive way. The Black Keys' performance of "Dearest" was nominated for a Grammy. Decide for yourself if Paul McCartney's version of "It's So Easy" deserves some critics' lauding or other critics' noting that he "tries too hard," and that McCartney goes "inexplicably batty." Music reviewers of the day generally agreed that the strongest performances on this CD are those of Cee Lo Green, Julian Casablancas, Modest Mouse, Patti Smith, Nick Lowe, and Detroit's own Kid Rock.

Nicely Varied Tribute Album submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:36pm This is an unusually inventive tribute album, particularly given the iconic and consistent nature of Buddy Holly’s signature sound. None of the artists here seek to replicate it wholesale, which is probably for the best, and each track offers a unique twist on its source material. The album is surprisingly varied and the contributing artists often offer something somewhat different from their own usual styles, making the compilation a nice change of pace in more ways than one. That said, most of the tracks can be broadly categorized as modern rock and roll, an updated version of the easygoing, energetic genre that Holly pioneered. For me, the highlights here are the Black Keys’ “Dearest”, Karen Elson’s “Crying, Waiting, Hoping”, and the Detroit Cobras’ “Heartbeat”, though there’s much to love.
