(Over-)Engineered for Wide Appeal submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:53pm Blake Shelton doesn’t do anything particularly interesting on this album, but it rests nicely in the sweet spot between country’s classic twang and the emerging rock-infused bro style that is slowly taking over the radio. His deep vocals easily carry the lyrics across different tempos and moods, and he employs his comfortable, inoffensive down-home charm throughout the album. The best track, “Sunny in Seattle”, is the one with a slightly different approach, built on the kind of cheeky humor that sticks after the track is over; it’s more subtle than the crowd-pleasing (but good) “Honey Bee”. This album is engineered to appeal to a wide audience both within and slightly outside of Shelton’s wheelhouse, and it is likely to do so.
