COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Fascinating submitted by CarolSeidl on December 14, 2017, 9:20pm Excellent autobiographical graphic novel. French photographer, Didier Lefèvre, traveled to Afghanistan in the late 1980s with a French team from Doctor's Without Borders. He was tasked with photographing their mission in the midst of the Soviet/Afghan conflict. This book contains Lefèvre's account of the journey as well as hundreds of photographs. Graphic artist, Fréderic Lemercier, framed the story and added his own drawings based on Lefèvre's photographs. This is a captivating account of a perilous trip, showing us the extreme risks that journalists and humanitarian aid workers take in dangerous areas of the world. The contrast between Afghan and western culture is sharp--to the point where it's hard to believe the two societies could exist simultaneously on the same planet. Accentuating this divide is the fact that DWB team is led by a woman. The fact-based story, reported with integrity, has all the elements of a fictional tale of adventure. And, if you're a Francophile, the fact that this is told in French is an added bonus.
