Ouch, my brain. submitted by eknapp on February 1, 2012, 1:02pm Set in not-too-distant-future Scotland, Rule 34 envisions a host of quite-plausible and often subtle social and technological advancements. Like Stross's Halting State, it's riddled with Scottishisms and a second-person pov which takes some getting used to.

Late in the book, a character sits in "slack-jawed near-comprehension, at the sheer novelty of it all." That's how I felt reading Rule 34. The hypothetical technology alone is enough to stuff a good science fiction novel; the police-procedural, political, social, and economic concepts are enough to make one dizzy. Rarely does a book beg for re-reading like this one.

OK submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 23, 2012, 4:03pm A sequel to "The Halting State," (which you must read first to understand the next book), "Rule 34" continues to story of a cop investigating cybercrime. This time she leads a division of police with a high turnover rate because they must investigate online smut (the title of the book comes from the internet joke that one can find oneline a website or reference to a sexual fetish about anything at all that one can imagine). The prose written as Scottish English is pronounced may make this hard to read.
I liked Charles Stross' Laundry series far better.
