Survivalist take on a zombie apocalypse. submitted by eknapp on November 9, 2011, 3:39pm A very utilitarian zombie apocalypse story. It's no World War Z, but I really enjoyed this one, which is written as the journal of a Navy pilot struggling to survive around the Gulf Coast.

It focuses mostly on the logistics of survival. The author is either a military man himself or did a lot of research. The details ring true.

A friend of mine disliked this book because of the way the author's right-wing politics occasionally shone through (it did get a bit heavy-handed at the end), but I just enjoyed the credible characters and attention to detail. Very solid, very fun read.

A Gripping Survivor's Tale submitted by scrabbler on July 31, 2014, 8:42am I didn't think I was a big zombie lit fan, but I ran across this book when looking for something else and decided to give it a try. I was sucked in immediately. The author has a military background and made his protagonist a naval officer, which I think contributed to the realism of the book. But it's not a "military" book per se; once things start going awry (and that starts on page one) his rank matters a lot less than his ability to survive day-to-day. The character is resourceful and easy to root for, which makes the book considerably more hopeful and optimistic than the grim subject matter would suggest. I found that Bourne's zombie world was thoughtfully realized and the "diary" style of the novel was very readable. My teenage son also devoured this one, as well as the sequels (which we felt compelled to acquire!)
