Early Retirement Extreme

Jacob Lund Fisker is well known in the on-line early retirement/financial independence (FIRE) community because of his Early Retirement Extreme blog. This is his book based on his life philosophy, which is, roughly: become a renaissance man so that you don't have to rely on a job or on others to thrive. By renaissance man, he means someone who is competent in most areas of life, so that very little is out-sourced, and money is saved. He advocates an almost radical change of mindset from the typical consumerist approach. By doing this himself, he was able to save and invest a large portion of his salary, retire after only a few years, and devote the rest of his life to work (either paid or unpaid) that is meaningful to him.
It's hard to know whether to recommend this book. On one hand, I love his philosophy, and think this philosophy is critically important for anyone who is interested in not being tied to a particular job or even way of life; that is, for anyone who would like more freedom in their life. On the other hand, this book is probably much more work than the average person should have to slog through. Fisker is a decent, but not great writer, and although probably very few people have put as much thought into the subject as he has, it does not come across in a very accessible form. For those interested in the topic of FIRE, I would recommend the blog written by Mr. Money Mustache: the content is very similar (they may disagree on a few points, but I'm not sure what those are off-hand), but MMM's writing is much more user-friendly.
