A "Trick"-y Mystery submitted by kirterry on August 9, 2018, 10:33am This book keeps you guessing about the murderer's identity until the end and includes some fun banter, but it also has some stereotypical/problematic characters.
interplay of light and dark
submitted by camelsamba on June 27, 2021, 10:34pm
There is an interplay of light and dark winding through the story: not obnoxious but obvious enough even for someone as dense as me (wrt literary analysis) to pick up. But on the other hand, it bothered me when it seemed that Gamache was explaining "chiaroscuro" to artists (or even art dealers) - they would definitely know the term! But perhaps I had a lapse in my listening and didn't catch who he was talking to. Similarly when Beauvoir was explaining it to Gamache - since Gamache is established as an art connoisseur he would probably have known it as well. Surely a writer as practiced as Penny can find a way to communicate the meaning of a term to the reader without turning central characters into mansplainers.
I was able to figure out the culprit - and even the reason - from clues dropped in the book. Of course I didn't get to see the confirmation, the review that Lacoste found, so I had to wait for confirmation in the reveal.
