COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A disappointment submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 18, 2013, 12:18pm This latest "Star Trek" series is set about 200 years before the original series. It portrays the very first starship Enterprise on the very first Star Fleet mission: to explore the galaxy and meet new species.
This series, while fun, is not nearly as good as the previous three "Star Trek" series. It also demonstrates many of today's prejudices. All the main character actors are European or Euro-American men, except for three. The only two actors of color play officers of the lowest rank. Most of the away mission include only men, even though the Vulcan on board is the science officer with military training. There are no LGBT characters, except one non-gendered alien who makes an appearance in only one episode.
Fans will appreciate the foreshadowing of events in the other series and the movies, such as "Next Generation." Fans will also likely appreciate that this Enterprise has no holodecks and therefore no goofy episodes in which the characters adventure through other landscapes and time periods. Fans of "Quantum Leap" will also appreciate the appearance of both Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell. Indeed, the series showcases actors from numerous other science fiction shows.
