Expected better ("See My Friends" by Ray Davies)
From the legendary lead vocalist and writer of band The Kinks, I expected Ray Davies' album, "See My Friends", to be wonderful. Unfortunately, it leaves a lot to be desired. Many of the "stars" that accompany Davies on the album serve to detract from the overall mood. There are some exceptions, though. The gems that shine through the murk are "Days / This Time Tomorrow" with Mumford & Sons, "You Really Got Me" with Metallica, "Dead End Street" with Amy MacDonald (at times sounding like Chrissie Hynde), and "Tired Of Waiting For You" with Gary Lightbody (the calm, soothing voice of the Snow Patrol singer genuinely expresses the tiredness in this song). Finally, "All Day And All Of The Night / Destroyer" with Billy Corgan is good, but it could be better. Rather than a medley of the two songs, I'd rather hear Ray and Billy do an excellent job of "All Day And All Of The Night" alone.
Overall, it's good and some of the songs are worth multiple listens. At the very least, the album inspires one to look up the originals of some of these songs to hear how wonderful they can really be.
