Tillsammans, ('Together' in English), is a commune in the heart of Stockholm, still going strong in 1975, long after most members of youth culture have abandoned their notions of free love, harmoniously integrated extended families, and naive political idealism in favor of jobs, discos, and TV sitcoms. The commune's 'leader' is sweet, conflict-avoiding Goran. The arrival of his conventional, middle-class sister Elisabeth, (towing 10-year-old Stefan and shy, awkward 13-year-old Eva) disrupts the fragile ecosystem of the commune. The commune also has to deal with Elizabeth's abusive alcoholic husband Rolf, who is a jerk, but somewhat redeemed by his discovery that being separated from his family is painful. Meanwhile, Stefan and Eva's bourgeois attitudes infect the other children with the longing for the evils of television, meat, and new clothes. 'Together' may have set ideals for themselves too lofty for any human to achieve, yet great value lies in their attempt to enact a principle of ancient vintage: the one that says an unexamined life is not worth living.
