Vile's Smoke Ring submitted by Caser on September 2, 2011, 5:06pm Kurt Vile's first release for Matador cleans up his vocals nicely, showcasing his incisive wit and even his humor. His style falls somewhere between the ethereal openness of Leonard Cohen and the sneer of Lou Reed, sharing both of these icons' ironic cynicism and turns of phrase. The best part about Smoke Ring is that it's both immediately likeable yet it grows with each listen. The album's track pacing is right on and the songs are strong throughout.
