Two differently abled people who are living in an institution and one night escape with their precious newborn baby. They land at the house of a widowed school teacher who takes them in only to have the police come to her door. The young man escapes and the last words the young woman speaks before being taken away are "Hide her". What follows are the next forty years in the lives of these characters.
