Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within the solar system. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain 'the creatures.' Now a U.S. journalist has agreed to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

Hardly Monstrous

The illegal immigration allegory is clear in this suspenseful sci-fi film. However, I found myself just as interested in what was happening in the lives of the two main characters as I was in the main plot. I've seen too many alien movies where the characters are one-dimensional parodies of comic book characters. It was refreshing to get to know them as people a little bit.
I also really liked the design of aliens. They didn't seem quite as scary as most movie monsters, but instead they were rather beautiful in a way. I wish the film had spent more time explaining what they actually were, but I suppose the audience's ignorance of their inner workings is intentional. They just seemed, well, alien. A very well done film.
