"With an introduction by Ursula K. LeGuin"--cover.
"Raised by a half-mad mother who dabbled in magic, Morwenna Phelps found refuge in two worlds. As a child growing up in Wales, she played among the spirits who made their homes in industrial ruins, but her mind found freedom in the science fiction novels that were her closest companions. When her mother tried to bend the spirits to dark ends, Mori was forced to confront her in a magical battle that left her crippled--and her twin sister dead. Now, having fled to a father she barely knew, Mori is sent to boarding school in England--a place all but devoid of true magic. There, she tempts fate by doing magic herself, in an attempt to find a circle of like-minded friends. But her magic attracts the attention of her broken and malign mother, pulling Morwenna toward a reckoning that will draw on everything she has learned in her years of engagement with stories and books"-- Provided by publisher.

A Book Full of Books submitted by Jan Wolter on June 30, 2013, 9:55pm This is a fantasy story and a growing up story, and it does those things quite competently. But I mostly liked it for being full of books. The main character of the book reads all the same books I read growing up (mostly science fiction and fantasy of the 1970's), and talks enthusiastically about them, and mentions a few I missed, quite a few of which I've since looked up.

Read it if you grew up in the 70s or 80s submitted by juanc01 on July 12, 2014, 8:47pm One of my favorite fantasy novels of the last decade

Took me back to the 70s submitted by Laura Bollettino on June 16, 2017, 12:03pm The narrator reads a lot of books that I read in the 70s, and I enjoyed reading her opinions about books that I remember. Sometimes I agreed with her opinions, sometimes I didn't, but either way I liked hearing how the books struck her.
