Originally released as a documentary in 2010.
In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.
DVD ; Dobly digital 5.1 surround ; widescreen (1.85:1).

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Amazing film! submitted by ingahuff on February 1, 2011, 11:02pm Amazing! There is no other word to describe this film. Even if you are not a fan of documentaries, this film will pull you in, shock you, and keep you on the edge of your seat. A true work of art -- all by chance....

Spoilers All Over The Place submitted by jaegerla on February 22, 2011, 1:37pm Angela.... What a fascinating person. Anyone that watches this film to the end can understand the stressful situation she was in. She lives in an isolated community, during an economic recession, caring for two mentally disabled men and her young daughter, and receives no exposure for her art. Most people would do one of three things in her situation:

Plan A: Make changes to make life more livable
Plan B: Break down and give up
or
Plan C: Go into denial and continue the same routine

Instead she goes with Plan D: Concoct an intricate, over the top online ruse to entertain herself. Assuming the story of Catfish was true (and not a mock documentary) it leaves you with so many questions. Why did Angela choose Nev as her target? Had she tried the same approach with other people, and maybe he was the first person to respond to it? Had she tried sending galleries her work in the past? Was her work rejected? How many times were they rejected? Did she begin to claim the art was done by a child in the hopes people would be more impressed by the style? Were the paintings themselves an excuse to contact people outside of Ishpeming? Was she even making the art herself or was someone else doing it?

Angela is a harmless woman that does nothing but work to help the people she loves. She is unusual but at her core is a selfless person. She doesn't appear to have any substance abuse or mental health issues as she is fully functional and handles so many responsibilities. It's intriguing that she created that online world to trick Nev into being interested in her. It seems like all she wanted was a friend. Or was there something else going on? What a mysterious lady.

DO NOT READ SPOILERS submitted by Sonia on July 28, 2011, 9:02am This is one of those movies where if you read any spoilers it will completely ruin your movie watching experience. There are lots of twists and turns that make this documentary intriguing. This movie also shows how big an effect Facebook and other websites have on our lives.

Fascinating! submitted by messelti on August 17, 2011, 11:59am Avoid the spoilers if you can. While this is a very well-made film, discovering the truth about these people is so much more fun if you do so at the pace of the movie instead of in a review you read ahead of time.

Still Thinking About It submitted by eringogreen on August 20, 2011, 8:02pm My favorite kinds of books and movies are the ones that have you still thinking about them days later. This is one of those. I was sure the whole time I watched it that this was a mock-umentary, but I looked it up and the filmmakers are claiming it to be 100% real.

Either way, I think this film is amazing. If it is fake, the moments in it seem very real and not acted. The reactions just seem like they couldn't be made up. If it's real, they did a really good job of putting together the storyline and throwing in creative elements to string it together with a theme. And, man, they stumbled on an interesting story!!

I was spoiled before I watched it and I still loved it. My friend told me all about it and it just intrigued me to want to see it. I don't think it ruined my experience, but I guess I'll never know!

SEE IT! submitted by markwells on January 30, 2012, 11:53am This is one of the best documentaries I've seen in my life. I was glued to the screen all the way through.

Great submitted by emjane on July 14, 2012, 9:17pm Engaging, creepy, and engrossing.

Not as good as the television show submitted by Chris82 on July 10, 2013, 3:42pm This was a good movie though the main character was a little unlikable at times. The entire premise was really disturbing yet addictive to watch. I recently started watching the television show by the same name that the Neve created and I like it far more than the movie.

excellent submitted by Jackie77 on August 17, 2015, 12:38am Excellent! Very good for everyone who dates online to watch. Parents should make tweens and teens watch. They need information on how people might not be what you think they are. The tv series of the same name is fascinating as well. Even though its pretty predictable by now..it's still captivating to watch.
