Animated story of an orphaned drummer boy who witnesses the the newborn baby Jesus. Having no gift to bring, the drummer boy gives the only thing he has - a song.

I Really Didn't Like This submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:03pm This Rankin/Bass production has all of the characteristic disjointed animation and none of the actual charm of the pair’s other holiday specials. While the film revolves around a predictable moral message, the Little Drummer Boy himself is intensely (and purposefully!) unlikeable, to the point where I quickly ceased caring about his inevitable redemption and didn’t buy his supposedly unselfish action (singular) when it did appear. Many of the side characters are depicted as racist caricatures; oddly, the main villain, with his broad American accent, is a bit of an exception to this, although his companion very much is not. The animation is worse than the standard for these productions, and, most egregiously, the composers don’t even bother to add any drum sounds at all to songs that specifically revolve around the Little Drummer Boy…drumming, which makes the visuals completely discordant with their own story. Some of the songs are passable, I guess, but the film’s only redeeming quality is its brevity- and even then, it’s a complete waste of time.
