Narrates the background story of Shepherd Book, a crew member of the starship Serenity, who, after being discharged from the Alliance following a failed mission, enters a monastery and decides to come aboard the Serenity as a missionary.

History (of) Book submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on July 26, 2014, 11:44pm Not a simple origin story for our powerful preacher, The Shepard's Tale gives all us Browncoats a look back from the end to his beginning. Rather effective storytelling method and quite decent artwork. There's never just one thing that makes the best-developed characters who they are, and through a series of flashbacks, we get the complex and surprising story of Shepard Book.

The story is written by Zack Whedon, based on an outline by Joss, and Zack's author's note at the end is quite moving in his appreciation for the fans of the Firefly universe and the actor who portrayed Shepard Book, Ron Glass.

Great back story submitted by Samke23 on June 19, 2017, 11:20am A little jumpy and I wish it was longer, but otherwise a great origin story. Incorporates some on screen scenes to show the reasoning behind Shepard's actions.
