Zola Jesus knows how to use her voice to grand dramatic effect, accompanied by lush orchestral backgrounds. Together with lyrics that are packed with natural metaphors, the instrumentation and vocals contribute to a sensation that flirts with the ethereal while maintaining a solidly grounded core. This is forward-thinking, interesting music that plays with the borders of pop music, and it has definitely piqued my interest in the artist’s other work.
