"Based on a true story."
When the Sudanese civil war reaches his village in 1985, eleven-year-old Salva becomes separated from his family and must walk with other Dinka tribe members through southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya in search of safe haven. Based on the life of Salva Dut, who, after emigrating to America in 1996, began a project to dig water wells in Sudan.

A Long Walk to Water submitted by leighsprauer on August 27, 2018, 1:44pm Based on a true story, this is the story of Salva Dut, a Lost Boy of Sudan, as he leaves his home and family in 1985 and becomes a refugee, first in neighboring countries, and then in the U.S. Interspersed within this is the story of a young Sudanese girl, who lives roughly 30 years after him, and still struggles with the lack of clean water and health care in her village. It is simply written, ideal for young teens to learn about a history of which they may not be aware. Moreover, Salva's courage, resilience, and dedication to helping others is inspiring and heroic. I would highly recommend this for upper elementary or middle school readers.
Great book for kids about the water crisis in Africa submitted by dlfredrickson on July 26, 2019, 3:47pm A friend recommended this book, and I can't say enough good things about it. I admit that my knowledge of African history is lacking. This book provided historical knowledge & cultural info. I'm planning on having my 8 year old read it next. A great book!
