Here the Imagineers showcase how different types of friction - static, kinetic, and rolling - come into play when they're designing Disney's theme park rides and attractions. From rollercoaster wheels for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to the shape of a Disney Cruise Line ship's hull, the Imagineers can use tribology (the study of friction) to find ways to reduce drag.

Friction Makes the Rides Go 'Round submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:39pm This video, aimed at viewers in late elementary school or early middle school, is a bit too earnest in its attempts at humor but does offer an excellent introduction to tribology (the study of friction and the vocab word of the day). By using Disney attractions to demonstrate practical applications of many of the concepts it introduces, the video makes the science come alive in a way that viewers can easily comprehend. The script’s attempts at humor often try way too hard, but our intrepid host is lively and keeps things moving along at a quick enough pace that any failed jokes pass by quickly. Disney parks fans will appreciate glimpses of the bygone Lights, Motors, Action! show and (perhaps less so) the giant Sorcerer’s Hat that used to grace Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Altogether this isn’t bad in the genre, although it can read sometimes like an extended advertisement.
