Sweet submitted by brielle on June 20, 2014, 3:50pm This book falls right into my favorite micro-genre. Fans of Jane Austen and fantasy, prepare to fall in love with a new series.

Engaging submitted by crwilley on July 11, 2014, 9:25pm I never thought I'd like this book - "Like Jane Austen, but with magic? I guess..." The whole subject matter of Jane Austen - finding suitable husbands for slightly unsuitable women - just never appealed to me all that much. But Jane Ellsworth is an appealing heroine, and I guess that was enough to do it for me, even if not enough to convince me that I might like Austen after all...

Bonus points for the very plausible way magic was woven into the story - not very much changed from Regency England, but glamour feels like an absolutely natural, real, seamless part of the world.

well done submitted by ssands on June 26, 2015, 7:49pm I think this worked for me because having magic in the book lead to action, which took the story away from stilted speech and meaningful glances of the drawing room and into something more interesting. It's a fun read.

Amusing submitted by torikaebaya on February 4, 2017, 11:01am A delight for the senses. I quite enjoyed Kowal's Shades of Milk and Honey. There were only a few chapters that did not leave me my laughing. I recommend reading aloud to best weave yourself into the absurdity and mystery of this Austen-inspired magical realism piece. That all being said, I did find the epilogue to be strangely lacking and tied up too neatly to do the work justice. Also, Shades of Milk and Honey is supposed to be the first in a series of books about these two characters... but their character development and romantic journey is definitively complete by the end of this story, so I'm unsure what those other books must look like. Otherwise, Shades of Milk and Honey was quite engaging. I highly recommend it, especially for the Regency-lit lover.
