COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I do enjoy Tom Ford, But... submitted by schoenbaechlere on June 26, 2011, 9:47pm I was expecting it to be better. It wasn't bad, Colin Firth was quite good, the look of the movie was stunning (as expected, Tom Ford), but I wasn't really drawn in. And when it ended, I didn't really care.

I fell... submitted by monipate on July 30, 2012, 8:43pm ...head over heels for this movie. It's Gorgeous, well-acted, and a beautiful story. In watched it twice while I had it rented for a week.

Stylish, Interesting Film submitted by doctorfang on August 2, 2015, 6:58pm Colin Firth delivers a nuanced performance as a man trying to move on after his partner's death. The art direction, settings, and costumes are outstanding, as is Mr. Firth's performance, as usual. Recommended.

Forced to carry the heaviest of secrets: A Single Man, 2009 submitted by ccrose on July 6, 2019, 9:30pm The acting of Colin Firth as a gay man whose lover has been killed in a car wreck, has stayed with me. I've watched it three times and each time I see more clearly what it would feel like to carry the most human aspects of love as a secret and the boulders of shame and terrible grief as secrets too.
Firth dresses impeccably, drives a shiny black Mercedes, keeps his college teaching smooth but we rarely see him hold a gaze with others. He notices moments around him that seem to shimmer with brief hope: a little girl's ironed summer blue dress, a woman's hair worked with care in a smooth French twist. But he can't quite believe his life could go on.
When he finally takes out his gun he frets about how to prevent a mess and we see his animation come to the surface, almost comic. There he is, the man who loved and was loved, laughing a little at himself. And he sets down the gun. His face softens.
Firth won Best Actor from BAFTA and Screen Actor's Guild for A Single Man. That's a good example of what an actor can do, open our eyes.
