Highly recommended by Patrick Rothfuss (the genius who wrote _The Name of the Wind_). He said that it is fairly often that a book can make him care, and not terribly hard for a book to make him laugh, but that it is a rare book that can make him fear for a character, but that this one did. I'd also add that, set in Africa, it was a nice change of pace from the western/westernized world so often found in books.

I paid for the hardcover so I could take it on vacation (and I almost *never* buy hardcover!), and it was money well spent.
