An obsessive historian's quest for the remains of the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain, ends in murder. Could a secret buried with Champlain for nearly 400 years be so dreadful that someone would kill to protect it? Although he is supposed to be on leave, Chief Inspector Gamache cannot walk away from a crime that threatens to ignite long-smoldering tensions between the English and the French. Meanwhile, he is receiving disquieting letters from the village of Three Pines, where beloved Bistro owner Olivier was recently convicted of murder.

a must read after "the Brutal Telling" submitted by carr1_e on July 24, 2011, 7:34am If you read "The Brutal Telling" and found, as I did, that the book ended abruptly and incomprehensibly, then you must read this book. Everything is explained, and loose ends are tied. And meanwhile a new mystery is presented and solved, and we learn more about the characters and the history of Quebec.

Excellent book submitted by amym on June 25, 2015, 11:08am Tying up the loose ends from The Brutal Telling could have been done in a very syrupy way, but I felt everyone's reactions were very realistic. The crime to be solved in this book wasn't as interesting to me as the wrapping up part, but it was interesting to see how the art world can work.

Great follow up submitted by 4Books on June 17, 2018, 2:33pm The surprising end of The Brutal Telling definitely leaves you wanting more. The unfolding of three significant stories/mysteries in this book is really well crafted.

Clever and absorbing submitted by kkjammers on June 16, 2021, 7:08pm Penny masterfully weaves together three stories: the fallout from a violent terrorist plot, the re-opening of The Brutal Telling case in which a Three Pines resident was found guilty, and the search for Champlain's body. Transitions between storylines were smooth. I am entertained by Penny's food focus; she lists the menu for many meals. If you want to try some new and tasty combinations, this book provides them.

a mystery in addition to a murder submitted by camelsamba on June 25, 2021, 12:44pm One of the things I enjoyed about this book in the series is all the time spent on the mystery of Champlain's body. It definitely weaves into all the other plot lines (which do include suspicious deaths) but it also provides a type of relief.

Mixed reaction submitted by apf1950 on October 11, 2023, 10:08am Penny tries to weave together three different stories here, one of which is an actual murder to be solved. Sadly, she jumps between the tales regularly, often in the same paragraph. That made the book less interesting -- and longer. It was nice, though, to see Olivier exonerated and released from prison as a postscript to an earlier book.
